The story of “Tevye” is based on a classic tale by Sholem Aleichem, one of Russia’s most famous Jewish folklore writers, which was the source material for the internationally acclaimed musical “Fiddler on the Roof.” Conceived as a tragic-comedy, “Tevye” recounts the trials and tribulations of a poor Jewish man and his family of seven daughters living in a small Ukrainian village during the late 19th Century. For many, this was a time of terror and suffering under a reign of persecution known as the Pogroms. Tevye (Samuel Rodenski) is a warm, kind-hearted man who frequently turns to God for advice and to complain about life’s hardship in equal measure. Following a good deed, his life is transformed by the gift of a cow and he becomes Tevye, the Milkman, a respected member of the village. The film follows the fate of his family as his daughters eventually marry and leave home amidst the upheaval before the outbreak of the Bolshevik revolution.

Samuel Rodenski originally portrayed the lead role in the stage production. His understudy was Topol who later made the character of Tevye internationally famous in the musical production on stage and screen. Rodenski was given the opportunity to recreate the role for the film version of “Tevye,” directed by Menahem Golan, producing a classic performance filled with great emotion, wisdom and humour. “Tevye” was shot entirely on location in Israel & Tunisia, and supported with a full orchestral music score by the acclaimed Hollywood composer Dov Seltzer.

After the original language film was completed, an English version remained unfinished, as various sections of the negative had been damaged and others had disappeared, believed lost forever. Following the recent discovery of the internegative, executive producers Paul Fishman and Louis Elman assembled all of the original material and embarked on an extensive digital restoration in the UK of both audio and image sources. Employing cinematic digital advances, previously non-existent, the film has been reconstructed in its entirety - producing a fully re-mastered and re-edited English language version. Re-mixed in Dolby 5.1 surround sound, the completion of “Tevye” brings to the attention of a whole new generation this wonderful and timeless classic.
